Characteristics of the Danish language
Danish is spoken by approximately 6 million people, mostly located in Denmark. There is also a region of northern Germany who speak Danish as their primary language in addition to several communities in parts of Scandinavia, Greenland, North and South America. Danish is in fact a Northern German language with links to Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish and Faroese.
Danish is a language that uses the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet at its core with three other letters added. It’s also made its way into many place names – such as those ending in –gate, -toft and –Thorpe. This is something left over the Viking times and the words ‘law’ and ‘riding’ are also from Danish.
Those who speak Swedish and Norwegian proficiently, should be able to understand Danish and vice versa. Although speakers of Norwegian are said to be the most well placed to understand the other two languages.
Short history of the Danish language
Danish language has its roots in the Old East Norse spoken during the middle ages of the 9th to 11th centuries. It then developed into Middle Danish with a merge with Swedish between the 12th and 15th centuries and then moved into Modern Danish from 1800s onwards. There are many ‘borrowed’ words in the Danish language taken from the French, English and German languages.
The bible was first translated into Danish in 1550. Famous authors include Hans Christian Anderson and Karl Adolph Gjellerup.
